Translation of the voiceover: “Before we leave, this exerpt from ‘Hollywood Graffiti’. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, reunited for the last time in front of a camera, in 1956 at the Warner studios, in a costume fitting for a film that was never made, because of Bogart’s death a few months later”.

The Harder They Fall must have been filmed in very late 1955 or 1956. There is a black 1956 Lincoln in the film frequently

This was the wardrobe shoot for the movie, “Melvin Goodwin USA”, it was shot on Monday, February 20, 1956 and at this time his throat was really bothering him. Bogie had surgery on his throat about ten days later (March 1, 1956). He never recovered and the movie was made in 1957 as “Top Secret Affair” with Kirk Douglas.

Brace67. Thanks for clearing that up. I have seen the harder they fall about 25 times and everytime I watch it I can tell he is sick during the filming. I think he knew he was sick but wouldnt go to a doctor. By the time he went it was to late. There is no doubt he was dying of cancer during the filming of that movie. By the time Lauren Bacall convinced him to go to the doctor it was to late. He was averse of going to doctors.

“The Harder They Fall” released in 1956 by Columbia Pictures was Bogart’s final film. Another was planned but never made. He was definitely ill and his friends commented about his poor appetite and weight loss. He complained of a burning feeling when he drank orange juice and he had a terrible cough. After tests by Dr. Maynard Brandsma, he was positively diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus which was removed during a lengthly surgery in February, 1956. He died bravely the following January.

Yourdeadmeat69. Unfortunatley that was part of the culture back in those days when drinking and smoking were cool. Part of Bogies prop was unforturnatly the cig and drink.

Brace67. I may be mistaken having the cancer with being diagnosed with cancer. Google The harder they fall then go to background and you can decide. Its is very clear to me, he was filming the harder they fall while he was sick. I have heard commentary and read that he was aware of his disease. Its a moot point. It was unfortunately his last movie.

The posted clips are not outtakes. They are wardrobe tests for “Melville Goodwin, U.S.A. a picture Bogart never made due to his illness which was cancer of the esophagus. His final film was “The Harder They Fall”, filmed in New York in 1955 and released by Columbia in 1956. He spent the entire year of 1956 following his surgery dying at his Holmby Hills home. All I can do to help you with your incorrect information is point you to the two biographies previously mentioned, one by his son Stephan.

I have given you two unimpeachable sources in order to get your facts straight. If you’re unwilling to reference them, I give up. The Harder They Fall was NOT filmed in 1956. It was filmed in 1955 and RELEASED in 1956. Bogart was diagnosed with esophagal cancer early in 1956 and operated on at Good Samaritan Hospital in L.A. in February, 1956. His esophagus was removed. Those are the facts. Please refer to the two excellent biographies on Bogart mentioned previously, one by his son Stephan.

The Harder they fall was realeased in may 1956. It was filmed entirely in 1956. Keep in mind movies were filmed anywhere from 4 weeks to a couple of months. Its not like today where movies take much longer to film. This movie was probably filmed in 6 weeks. It sounds like you are a bogart fan like myself. If you watch the harder they fall you can hear his raspy voice and he looks ill. He even continued to smoke knowing he had cancer. He switched to “filtered cigarettes” . He died 1-14-57

Brace67. I know that was just a screen test. The only fact I am trying to tell you is that You said he was diagnosed with cancer after He filmed the harder they fall. This is incorrect. I am 100% positive. He was getting progressively weaker from the cancer during the filiming of The Harder they fall. Google the Harder they fall and look at the wikopeidia entry for this movie. The wikopedia entry is correct. He actually filmed the screen test after the filming of the harder they fall.

Mr. Jim, You just have incorrect information. These are not outtakes but are wardrobe tests for Columbia’s planned movie “Melville Goodwin U.S.A.” and were shot in January, 1956. Bogart never made another film following “The Harder They Fall”, filmed in 1955 and released in 1956. He died of esophagal cancer not throat cancer. Please be informed and read “Bogart” by A.M. Sperber and Eric Lax and “Bogart” by his son Stephen Bogart. Also, read other comments by “JubalCalif” above. You are wrong.

Brace67. The harder they fall was filimed in 1956. During the filming of this movie he was already diagnosed with cancer and became progressively weaker. He continued to work and smoke knowing he had cancer. I am positve. I have read books on him. In fact google The harder they fall and they will tell you he was sick during filming. 1955 He was filming The desperate hours. You can hear his raspy voice during filming. He looked ill. He died on my birthday January 14,1957. I am 1-14-60

These aren’t really outtakes. They’re wardrobe tests that
Bogie & Bacall made in preparation for a film they were going to make at Warner Bros (“Melville Goodwin U.S.A”). As is well known, Bogie soon was diagnosed with esophagal cancer & they never started filming the picture. Sadly, he died in his Holmby Hills home in Jan. of 1957. Warner Bros ended up making the movie with Kirk Douglas & Susan Hayward, retitling it “Top Secret Affair”. THANK YOU for posting this fascinating footage!!

Humphrey Bogart was diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus in January of 1956, shortly after completing “The Harder They Fall”, filmed in 1955 and released in 1956. He and his wife had completed wardrobe tests for a planned movie at Columbia called Melville Goodwin, U.S.A. which he never made. He was operated on in February, 1956 at Good Samaritan Hospital and his esophagus removed, however his condition proved terminal. He never made another movie and passed away at home in January ,1957.

Brace67. This screen test was done after Bogie had just filmed his Final picture, “The harder they Fall” which was filmed in 1956. He was already diagnosed with throat cancer during the filming of that movie. U can hear it in his voice. this was to be Bogies and Bacalls first movie together since Key Largo. It never got past the screen test and he died on January 14, 1957. It was unfortunate he continued to smoke and work with this cancer diagnosis. He may have been able to recover otherwi

However much I love Bogart the actor, I can never forgive the drunk who smoked his way to an early death and deprived us of many enjoyable years. Lit up by noon, four packs a day, he goes from 44 in 1944 to 90 in twelve years flat.
They say they didn’t know booze and cigs could kill as well as they do today. All you have to do is look at Bogarts ruined face and stubby fingers as his body collapsed to be tell.
But while they were a couple, they were something, weren’t they?

No, actually it was the title I indicated, not The Jet Set. I have read quite a lot about Bogart’s life and have seen most of his movies multiple times. As his very good friend director John Huston said of him during his moving eulogy, he is quite irreplaceable.
