Despite pressure from the local authorities, notably the crafty Capt. Renault (Claude Rains), Rick’s cafà (C) has become a haven for refugees looking to purchase illicit letters of transit which will allow them to escape to America. In the special edition DVD, Director Michael Curtiz felt that he made Rick seem far too brutish, so he changed it so that Strasser shot first.

  2. Mxsmanic says:

The choice of words is great: “Major Strasser HAS BEEN shot”—thus making it clear to Rick that the Captain is on his side.

I AIM TO MISBEHAVE!!!” and then he is back in the fight with an attuitude as Victor laslow said in this movie – THIS TIME I KNOW our side WILL WIN!!!! oooo rrrahhh!! The bottle is Vichy water. The Vichy government was a puppet French government controlled by the Germans and despised by the French, so Renault was showing his new found patriotism by symbolically kicking the bottle.

  9. WilliamPSheetmetal says:

Renault’s action symbolized the “rejection of Vichy France’s authority and his embrace of the Allied Cause.”,,, It also symbolized that start of Renault’s and Rick’s “beautiful friendship.” or symbolises the end of French complicity with the Nazi regime. -ciao

Could somebody please explain why Renault, at 1:20, glanced at the bottle, dropped it into the bin and then kicked the bin away from him?

Why in the Looney Tunes cartoon of this movie did the girl parachute out of the plane to bugs if that’s not what really happened in the real thing?
