However, I believe that it’s mostly matters not when you start playing chess, but how much time and effort you dedicate to that game. If you start playing at 6 you may become a grandmaster by 16 with right training and talent. If you started at 30 maybe you’ll be able to become a Grandmaster by 40. Adults however have a lot less time to play chess since they have work, family, children and lots of problems they have to think about besides chess. That is also why players generally do not obtain the highest chess title if they start playing late.

Kids being kids they need to win to continue their journey in any activity, if they loose too often they will opt put. So try to blend theory with simple games where they can have fun and a have a sense of accomplishment which will bring them back to the game.
I am currently trying to teach a 4 1 year old grandson of a friend and he does know how to move the pieces about on the board, well to a certain extent naturally as he cannot play the knight’s tour yet, but at the end of the theory lesson which lasts up to 5 minutes max, he wants to play a game, so I play ending game positions with him that I think he can resolve. And even if he is wrong in the moves I at times let him win, I can later go back to the position and show him by asking what is his next best move on how to resolve the issue.
Bottom line, the right age is when they show an interest for the game.
